From the Ralsko Project

My Ralsko

Roads, the sky, piping, housing estates, fences, children playing, an abandoned Russian barracks, an extinct volcano set against the horizon, and then more piping. Snapshots seen through the eyes of mainly Roma women, and, in some cases, their children and grandchildren, to whom a team of students from the Charles University Faculty of Humanities distributed single-use cameras. Over the course of less than year, more than 450 photos were taken documenting not only the area surrounding Ralsko, which the women call home, but also the intimate environment of their families and friends. This project, which contains elements of visual anthropology, artistic research, and participative art, included discussions about the photographs, out of which emerged enlightening stories placing the photographs within a broader context.
