Probably some eight years ago, during a visit to a newly-opened shopping centre, I was struck by the conflict between my idea of what public space should be and what it actually was, i.e. as offered to me for consumption. Most of all I was attracted by the relatively large amount of blue collar workers, who work on a short-term basis for their employers, and the many shoppers from lower social classes.
