Karel Kašpařík

Amateur from the Haná Region

Karel Kašpařík (1899–1968) is known today even amongst photography experts as the author of three photographs: the avant-garde-conceived girl’s face (actress Nataša Gollová) in the picture entitled Why?, a detail of barefooted farmers, and a detail of backs of photographs sometimes entitled Work, other times Slave or even The Work Capitalist. He did not manoeuvre within the centres of avant-garde events; he lived out in the country. Perhaps for this very reason, his work has not yet been summarized in a separate monograph. The best elaboration yet came thanks to Antonín Dufek through an exhibition prepared in 2000 by the Moravian Gallery in Brno and the Museum of Art in Olomouc.
