Chasing the Ghost: On Richard Prince’s Cars

The notion of prosperity, linked with progress, the competitive accumulation of assets, and individual success has always been glaringly visible in American society. However, over the recent past decades, things have changed drastically since the time this fantasy first originated. In 2016, we are living in a time when we might hear the term ‘American Dream’ only uttered in jest or defeated cynicism, and the desire of today’s younger generations to live a linear, progressively career-oriented life is fading away. Inevitably, their disillusionment with this ever-insatiable dream-chasing ideology is accompanied by their abandonment of the desire for the material objects that rewarded them and gave them confirmation in the past.
