Viktoria Binschtok

Popping the Filter Bubble

In her slowly expanding series Cluster, Viktoria Binschtok creates groupings of two, three or more photographs, always consisting of one older picture from her archives plus one or several more that she made by reconstructing images found online. During her online searches, Binschtok is actually looking for her own older photographs: by inserting her original file into the search engine, the algorithm then finds images with similar shapes and color schemes. She then picks some of the results and re-photographs them into professional images that she arranges into clusters. She installs these clusters in various different ways, perhaps in order to emphasize the multitude of contexts in which the photographs are found and the arbitrary nature of their materialization in the post-digital era.
