Hexamiles (Mont-Voisin)

Hexamiles (Mont-Voisin) is an important milestone and parallel to two volumes of illustrated encyclo-pedias. Batia Suter conceived the structure of this book as the scheme of an image mosaic placed in new contexts. The method of appropriation across history is a condensed illustrated encyclopedia. The extended archive of images in the book gave way to a confrontation of associative values, creating a new combined layer of images that work with the aesthetic of natural motifs in a particular visual style. Romantic views of the landscape alternate with natural motifs and objects that are retroacti-vely fixated in a kaleidoscope of images. The epic subtext of the photographic montages refers to the ancient meaning of the word ‘hexameter’. The book also stepped outside of its presentation framework into an entirely new dimension: an outdoor exhibition at the highest dam in Europe, the Mauvoisin Dam in Switzerland.
