Artist, student of photography at FAMU, Klára Žitňanská, decided to
de-personify the family in her photo series, Rodina (Family). She does this
on two levels: both linguistically and visually. The linguistic de-personification consists her classifying her family members – as she herself says – as “primers.“ There are no names or surnames in the titles of individual photos, but rather general appellations beginning with the basic words “mom“ and “dad.“ Both “mom“ and “dad“ can actually evoke the reading primer world and such primers are about basic principles and not about human intimacy. The sentences, “Emma has a mom. Mom has meat. Oh how lucky we are.“, cannot be seen as intimate expressions.
