Vojtěch Fröhlich’s Landscapes

Vojtěch Fröhlich is an example of an artist who builds his works on the edge of media and the intersection between photographic and nonphotographic images. This can be seen in both his works and his life path. After he finished studies at the Department of Photography at FAMU, he continued at the Atelier for Intermedia Creations at Prague’s Academy of Fine Arts (AVU).

Between 2008 and 2009 Vojtěch Fröhlich created two expressive collections of landscape photography. In the series, Modřanská rokle (Modřany ravine) he returned with freshly enlarged photographs to the place where they were taken and worked into them plants from the given area. His photographs intermingle with microscopic remains of plants that cling to the emulsion of the photographic positive. This is something one could call bio-art. Fröhlich’s photographs are dynamic; they change. On the original enlargements one could smell the scent of individual biotopes according to the floral community of the given area. This creative principle has the character of a conceptualist gesture, but at the same time, however, a strong visual dimension – Fröhlich himself says that he wants to hover on the border of kitschiness.
