Pragueʼs Smíchov area is Poláčekʼs home district and Poláček is an enthusiastic expert on this subject: “Smíchov is like a textbook on the history of architecture: each block heading away from the city centre is another epoch.” The series, Noční Smíchov / Night-time Smíchov, described in Poláčekʼs words as “a path from the pub”, is marked by the agonizing, today almost forgotten, solitude of the totalitarian night.
