The UK-born artist and photographer, resident in Melbourne, Australia, regards himself above all as a collector and archivist. Even in his own original work he employs a collector’s approach – for example in his series entitled The Small Conflict Archive, which contains various further sub-series set in the urban environment. He finds, rather than photographs, the situations and moments captured in his work. In a similar spirit, he also works with found photographs, mostly by unknown authors. In 2008 Porter was given an archive of newspaper photographs focused on finance and economy in the early 1980s, amounting to roughly four thousand items.
