Pillars of Home is a book of ninety-eight instant homemade sculptures, each of which took no longer than thirty minutes to create — the thirty minutes in which a child sleeps and one can rest or work or both at once, which is how this visual game was created. Installations made of common household items are a favorite topic among artists who are also mothers, who use them to point out the two interconnected aspects of childcare, which consists of endless creativity and improvisation and also infinite self-sacrifice and care. The objects are capriciously playful, though sometimes, they bring to mind the snares and traps which the fresh mother must learn to overcome. The author had already introduced this compositional lineage in her previous photographic collections, but here, she found clearly defined limits for her work to operate in.
