Alfredo Jaar
The Art of Staging Encounters
For over thirty years, Alfredo Jaar has been investigating the mechanisms of construction of knowledge employed by mass media for ideological manipulation, and exploring the potential of artistic practices as critical interventions and strategies of resistance. Internationally exhibited and widely acclaimed, his work has emerged in the context of the heated debates surrounding the ethics and politics of representation. His installations and performances seek to reconfigure visual regimes that determine what is communicated and what is not, what we are allowed to see and what we are prohibited from seeing, by supporting the claim to visibility of hidden or censored people and stories, and by performing their re-emergence in the representational discourse that silenced them.
