The Planet As a Photographic Plate

Climate change research depends on a vast array of material data sources, yet its public discourse is dominated by generic data visualizations detached from sensory experience. To bridge the gap between data and the world, I argue for visualizations that focus on the world’s self-inscribing properties: the innumerable traces and their causal connections. Such an autographic approach means looking at data differently: not as abstract references, but as physical artifacts that are part of the phenomenon.
