The category of symbol and working with the symbol is elusive, a purely sophisticated way of categorization from the point of view of art history and art criticism. For that reason, the selection of authors is even more relative than with the previous themes. Moreover, while some of the artists we have selected have worked with symbol throughout their career, with others in some stages of their work we could speak rather of subjective documentary, conceptualism, minimalism, or even other things. Such is, however, the fate of categories of art-theory – they do not allow an exact definition of the set of works of art that they attempt to define.
