Raplh Eugene Meatyard
On Subtext
The American photographer Ralph Eugene Meatyard (1925–1972) worked as an optician in Lexington, Kentucky. He pursued photography in his spare time, joining the Lexington Camera Club in 1954. He might have been seen as an eccentric, developing a harvest of the past twelve months at once, or cherishing a collection of junk (which to him was a set of Surrealist props). Today, Meatyard ranks among the leading names in photography. Apart from his estate, the San Francisco-based Fraenkel Gallery also represents that of Garry Winogrand, as well as being the primary representative of a number other eminent photographers (Diane Arbus, Robert Adams, Lee Friedlander, Adam Fuss, Katy Grannan, Richard Learoyd, Richard Misrach, Nicholas Nixon, Hiroshi Sugimoto).
