One of the issues photography currently faces involves seeking for and defining its own identity – determining what photography is today and how its artists should come to terms with the 170-year-old history of this medium. The key questions concern how to deal with the heritage of traditional photography in an era of social media, mobile equipment, and shared, fleeting, evanescent, and instant images. The photographic works of Bill McDowell reflect these issues and, as if almost by chance, provide answers to some of the questions.
