By the Sea: Photographs from the North East, 1976-1980
Markéta Luskačová knew the northeast coast from visiting Chris Killip in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1976–1977. In 1978, the local film and photography team Amber invited her, along with Martine Franck, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Paul Caponigro, to photograph North East England. Most of the pictures were taken on the beaches of Whitley Bay, near Newcastle. Everywhere she went, she had to take her one-year-old son (she dedicated the book to him). He was often taken care of by local women with children who were on the beach that day, and in this way the photographer became one of them instead of just an unin- vited foreigner and voyeur.
