František Drtikol
Mystical Themes in Photography
František Drtikol (1883–1961) was a widely recognized figure in the international art scene of his day. An active photographer from the very beginning of the 20th century until the mid-1930s, he firmly established himself among the elite of world photography and remained part of it even after he decided to abandon the medium altogether in 1935. This decision was brought to about, among other things, by the economic impact of the Great Depression, although without question Drtikol’s great love of painting also played a role – already inclined towards it from an early age, he now desired to pursue it full time. It is rather likely that his spiritual activities also helped to precipitate the decision.
