Jan Kuděj

The Right Angle?

At the end of the nineteenth century photography was a new medium that changed human understanding; it brought not only the possibility to capture reality, but also a new experience as to how to handle reality. In his book, The Language of New Media (2001), Lev Manovich claims that at the end of the twentieth century there is no longer a problem with how to capture/ preserve objects (the world) in the form of new images, but rather it was more about finding objects – in today’s media reality – that exist at all. We cease to believe in photography as a record of objective fact and are returning to that which was the starting point for this medium: the image itself. Jan Kuděj’s work deals with this primary figurativeness and thereby reflects on the means itself of thinking about an image and how to view it.
