Pavel Mára
Interview with Pavel Mára by Pavel Baňka
Your name is often mentioned in Czech photography over the span of the last three decades. You take part in a number of group presentations, you exhibit regularly both at home and abroad. Yet despite this, in my eyes, you are not connected to any specifically-defined group, movement or trend. You’re a stand-out loner. How do you explain this?
Perhaps it’s my distinct view of photography, in which I have always tried to emphasize that which is specific about the genre, what distinguishes it from other artistic disciplines. It was mainly an exact record of the material (substantive) world, but at the same time the possibility of visual transformation. Yet I am of course particularly interested in paths close to the free “interpretation“ of fact – despite my photographs being essentially “pure“ records of reality with no computer manipulation.
