Elements of audio-vision

The relationship between image and sound, between the seen and the heard was in the course of Western history mainly homological: the sound that was heard had its source that was seen, referred to it and was anchored in it. Exceptions to this homology, among which we can list latemedievalmystery plays or Italian Renaissance pastorals, were using the separation of sound from sight for achieving magical effects: the sound divorced from its source always alludes to a different one, although perhaps not visible at first sight.
