The Ambivalence of the Diary

In our present era of simple, rapid and massive sharing, the mere fact of the existence of a work which has evidently been created with great care, and yet which has remained unpublished for many years, is unusual. But it is only its power to strike a chord with an audience that determines whether or not it will remain only a curiosity. Today, presented with a photo-book of the “diaries” of Viktor Kopasz, one is easily astonished. Since 1989, for more than twenty years, an entire body of work has accumulated here, gradually exploring and transfiguring its own form, an oeuvre with the ambition to transcend the personal to strive for a universal message – and which for Viktor Kopasz represented an all-out struggle to achieve a style all his own.
