Mary Ellen Bartley

Between the Spiritual and the Abstract

Mary Ellen Bartley is an important American artist who lives and works in New York. Her work often stands on the threshold of semi-transparent tonality, and that is where they are most touched by abstraction. This particularly applies to her series Modeling Light and Push 2 Stops.

Within these series, Bartley uses the materials of photography as inspiration. She plays with photographic techniques and technical processes in a distinctive and imaginative way, evoking the feeling in viewers that they are witnessing a ritual in which the ordinary meets the peculiar. The depicted objects and fragile arrangements feel intangible, as if we are witnessing an act of levitation.
