The globally understood and oft-used term “Helsinki School“ is not able to uncover the subtle nuances of the creative work of Finnish photographers. Certainly one can find a number of common features and approaches in their work. These are motivated mainly by the relation of man to nature. However superficial correlations can easily be attributed to empty clichés of opinion. Also in the work of Anni Leppälä (born in 1981) we find diffused light – very attractive for Central Europeans – or the truly unique phenomenon: the cold portrayal of reds and browns, otherwise primarily warm colours. For this geographical region it is common after all that ochres, rusts and mahogany tones are relayed in their darker versions (values) into steely depths or into lofty hues of Prussian (Berlin) blue.
