With a time gap of more than a quarter-century, it is clear that the situation of a person living originally under East European communist totalitarianism, who as an adult shifted from one jilted societal order to another (capitalism), can consider that a priceless life experience. It represents a harshly effective “vaccine” that allows one to maintain an almost fatalistic distance from any sort of a priori judgments on political ideology, societal prejudices and religious dogma. On the other hand, however, individuals permit themselves to preserve a feeling of needed vigilance against manipulation of the herd; social inequality; ostentatious, omnipresent consumerism; daily injustice and last but not least it also allows one to express sympathy or active resistance toward emotional numbness.
