The position of Stefan Hunstein (born 1957) on the German photography scene is indeed unique. In fact, he is only called a photographer because of the difficulty involved in properly placing him within the visual arts. He achieved fame after receiving the German Photography Prize (1991) without, paradoxically, actually photographing anything himself. His actual main profession is acting; he is currently a permanent member of the Bavarian State Theatre in Munich. Perhaps it is his professional double life or the fact that he cannot be compartmentalized by the media that not only allows for a certain amount of independence but also lets him adopt the unique approach towards the photographic medium and photographic themes that he has been exploring for more than twenty years.
