Do Algorithms Dream of Portraits of Their Own Mothers?

Post-digital visual culture and the journey below the surface of photography with Filip Láb

I remember how back as an undergraduate, I was captivated by Soumrak fotožurnalismu (The Twilight of Photojournalism, 2009). Filip Láb, a dedicated photojournalist, lecturer and promoter of the public understanding of the theory of photography, wrote it with his mother, Alena Lábová, also a photography theorist. The book explores themes that were central to Filip’s thought: photographic manipulation, the ethics of photojournalism and the onset – then in its infancy – of smartphones and the digital image as an indivisible component of not just civic but also professional photography.
